Task brief

The task brief is presented on the table in the caravan. The brief for the task is as follows:

Eat the grape.

You must not damage the caravan, or climb out of the window.

Fastest wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • The task takes place in the caravan, into which Alex locks the contestants, once they have read the task brief.
  • Inside the caravan, there is: a pair of scissors which are locked closed with a padlock; a wooden chest tied and wrapped in string, the other end of which is attached to the ceiling (this chest contains some darts); another wooden chest, which is locked with a padlock (this chest contains some grape scissors - presumably a call-back to Frank Skinner's prize submission in the first ever episode of the show, a tin of chickpeas - possibly a call-back to the 'Do the most preposterous thing with a chickpea' task, and the key for the caravan door); a small wooden frame on the wall, with a rock mounted on it, and a small plaque with the word "Rocky" [rock-key] (behind which there is a key for the scissors padlock); the book Grapes of Wrath, within which there is a secret compartment containing the key for the padlocked chest (and also a grape within a second secret compartment).
  • The windows and sunroof of the caravan are all open.
  • A dartboard is laid on the ground, below one of the windows. Inside the caravan, there is a sign below that window, stating "Score fifty for a prize".
  • If the contestants score 50 points on the dartboard, Alex passes them a lunchbox through the sunroof, inside of which there are some fake plastic grapes, and Alex's library ticket for the book Grapes of Wrath.
  • A plinth stands on the lawn with a bowl containing bunches of fake plastic grapes, and one real grape, upon it.
  • There were apparently other real grapes hidden within the caravan that the contestants could have found, but their locations were not revealed.

Attempts

Here's a brief description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on writing up some additional detail, though!

  • Dara quickly found the key in the Grapes of Wrath book, skipping several steps of the puzzle. He ate the grape in 4 minutes and 36 seconds, earning first place.
  • Fern initially tried gnawing through the string, before completing the steps up to finding the Grapes of Wrath book, within which she discovered the hidden grape. She ate the grape in 10 minutes and 44 seconds, earning third place.
  • John used brute force to cut the string with the still padlocked scissors, before completing all of the other steps of the puzzle. However, once getting out of the caravan, he struggled to see the grapes on the plinth, instead opting to open the tin of chickpeas, and suggesting he might climb the TV aerial like a ladder. He finally found and ate the grape after 20 minutes and 20 seconds, earning last place.
  • Munya completed all the steps of the puzzle, using string to guide his darts towards the bullseye of the dartboard. He ate the grape in 11 minutes and 5 seconds, earning fourth place.
  • Sarah started searching the room for clues, including looking in a swear jar, before finding the grape hidden in the Grapes of Wrath book. She ate the grape in 6 minutes and 10 seconds, earning second place.
