Stevie’s scented gel pens

Stevie brings in a set of scented gel pens in many colours.

When she says that she’d found a “cultural cachet” at school involving the pens, Greg instructs Alex to write down that phrase. Alex mistakes the word “cachet” for the French word “caché”, and has to ask whether he needs to hold down the ‘e’ on his tablet to access the ‘é’ character.

Stevie explains that people would write the names of their crushes on their hands and then walk around the school smelling their hands all day.

She also explains that the “cultural cachet” relating to this was that – as someone whose name begins with ‘S’ – she was able to draw the ‘Super S’ (which she mistakenly calls the “Superman S”, which is a very different thing). After she asks Greg whether he is familiar with this, since he was in school in the ‘70s, he has to point out to her that he’s not Victorian.

Greg awards Stevie 2 points, since gel pens are a little bit too new for him to relate to.
