Jakob lets nature run its course
Jakob realises that no matter what he does, there's a strong probability that the candle's flame will go out.
He therefore decides to just let the candle burn out on its own.
He carefully moves the candle into the laboratory, and the candle burns itself out after 23 hours, 7 minutes and 28 seconds which, incredibly, earns him second place.
