Anne’s costly “deb dress”
Anne brings in her debutante ball dress, or “deb dress”.
Anne says that her feminist mother had offered her A$1,000 to not attend the event when she was 17, but that she had passed up the opportunity of this money to instead be paraded around in front of men. She jokes that she had earned A$1,000 at the event anyway (implying that he had earned this through less than reputable means from said men).
When Tom Cashman asks what a ‘deb’ is, Anne says that he was obviously never invited to one, and explains that it’s basically an event set up for women to find their husbands.
When Jenny asks Anne if this was how she’d met Lloyd, Anne confirms that it was, and Lloyd adds “That was a very hotly contested auction” (thus coining the episode title).
Tom Gleeson states that “mothers hate their daughters”, and Anne earns 5 points.
