The Premium Economy Hooley Dooleys expose Tom Gleeson's homosexuality
Anne and Josh begin their attempt by sitting casually on the floor, discussing the different conspiracy theories which already exist.
Anne eventually suggests that they come up with new conspiracy theory which involves Tom Gleeson, and they decide theat they want to call him and try to trick him into admitting to something. Josh suggests that they could try to get audio clips of him in which he sounds gay.
Josh subsequently phones Tom Gleeson, but is clearly scared before Tom evens answers. Josh tells Tom that he’s got some really specific questions to ask him, the first of which is “What is the capital of Utah?”. Tom begins to giggle, having worked out that this is likely part of a task, and asks what would happen if he doesn’t answer. When Josh struggle to answer, Anne joins the conversation, leading Tom to correctly guess that the pair are a team, and that they need him to do them a favour. He therefore answers the question correctly, with “Salt Lake City”.
Following up, Josh asks Tom to list “some gay things”, leading Tom to ask they are trying to reveal that he’s homophobic, and stating that that’s an “industry secret”. At this point, Josh quickly ends the call, explaining to Anne that because Tom had said the word ‘homophobic’, they could just edit out the ‘phobic’ bit to get audio of Tom saying “homo”.
Anne and Josh present their ‘conspiracy theory’ as a breaking news segment of ‘News Truth’, hosted by Anne, wearing a jacket and glasses. Anne announces that they are about to make a revelation about one of Australia’s leading, white, male, straight comedians, Tom Gleeson, who she claims is able to host every show in Australia just because he is white, male, and straight.
Anne introduces Josh, who is wearing a frilly, purple, sparkly top, and claims that he has some big news about Tom Gleeson. He sniggers and shares that he has a tape to play, which documents the following ‘conversation’ between Josh and Tom:
Josh: “Hey Tom. Hi. Yeah, I was just watching my favourite housewives…”
Tom: “Salt Lake City.”
Josh: “Oh my god! Of course. You love Salt Lake City?”
Tom: “Yeah, yeah.”
Josh: “Um, I was just calling to check that you’ll be nice to me on the show, yeah?”
Tom: “How’s this gonna work for me?”
Josh: “Pardon?”
Tom: “Do a favour for me.”
Josh: “What? Tom! Do a favour where?”
Tom: “Down low.”
Josh: “Wait. Tom, are you flirting with me?”
Tom: “[laughing] Yeah, yeah.”
Josh: “No, it’s actually feeling a little uncomfortable.”
Tom: “You want me so bad Josh. I’m gay. I’m gay. I’m gay. [laughter]”
Josh: “Tom, are you, um…?”
Tom: “I feel Josh, down low. It was really good.”
Josh: “Can we just return to why I called? I was just calling to talk about the show.”
Tom: “Are you trying to reveal that I’m homo-gay? Because I’m gay? That’s an industry secret, that I’m gay.”
At the end of the recording, Josh concludes that it seems pretty gay to him. Anne, although not an expert, says that she agrees. They then end the show, and both sink below the table.
In the studio, Anne and Josh are very pleased with their effort, and high-five one other. Tom Gleeson makes sure to emphasise that during the original call, when he’d said he was homophobic, he had been joking.
He then points out how weird it was that, after he’d apparently admitted to being homophobic, the pair had decided that it would somehow be more controversial if they instead revealed that he was gay. Anne reveals that they’d had a few different ideas, but that Josh had kept going back to the idea of exposing Tom as being gay.
When Tom Gleeson says he’s glad they’ve upped the diversity for the programme, Josh responds by yelling “Shut up, poofter!” at him.
Tom likes that the story had been about him, so Anne and Josh earn 5 points each.
