Jack gives up in frustration
Jack asks Alex what year he was born, but Alex responds by asking Jack what year he thinks Alex was born, causing Jack to insist that he just answer the question.
Jack then estimates that Alex is 52, and Alex is initially offended, before revealing that he was born in 1978, and that he is therefore 45, at the time of recording.
However, Jack then decides that there’s no way he can perform the necessary calculations in his head, and so refuses to give an answer, forfeiting the task.
In the studio, Greg observes that Jack had begun the task “with the aggression of a 1970s policeman”. Jack admits that, at the time, he couldn’t have imagined that the outcome of the task would ever matter.
