Jonnie hunts for clues
Jonnie is clearly familiar with the show, so he immediately begins to look around the room for clues.
He quickly manages to find a book of pH testing strips, and starts dipping the strips into the shots systematically, hoping to find the acidic vinegar.
Like Adrian, Jonnie also finds the 3D glasses in the room. For a moment, he considers whether they could be used in combination with the pH testing strips. Unlike Adrian, he decides not to put them on.
Jonnie thinks his pH testing plan has worked when one of the strips turns red. However, he had not accounted for the possibility of their being other acidic liquids in the glasses, such as the kombucha he then drinks, expecting vinegar.
Jonnie then returns to his hunt for clues, quickly identifying that the number ‘85’ appears in multiple places throughout the room. Correctly deducing that the vinegar is in the 85th shot glass, he identifies the glass labelled with a ‘1’, and counts from there. He locates the correct glass but, in the process of trying to pick it up, actually knocks it over instead, spilling its contents across the table. He sips the dregs from the glass itself, confirming its contents, and then rushes off to find a drinking straw, with which he sucks the spilled vinegar off the surface of the table (nearly choking himself in the process, as it hits the back of his throat).
Having sucked as much of the vinegar of the table as practicably possible, he exclaims “I’ve drunk all the vinegar, I think”. Alex agrees that he probably has.
Back in the studio, Alan Davies expresses how proud he is of Jonnie for finding the ‘85’ clue. He recounts how he went looking for clues in many of the tasks he’d attempted in his own series, and had never found anything. Alex confirms that there was “not a chance” that Alan would have spotted the clue, if he’d been doing the task himself.
Alex reveals that Jonnie had found the vinegar at 8 minutes 28 seconds, but it took him another 1 minute 58 seconds to drink all the vinegar, after he’d fetched his straw. Because of this delay, Adrian beat him by about a minute and a half in the task, and Jonnie was placed second.
