Richard wasn't really listening

Richard apparently does not fully understand the task brief (which Joe refuses to repeat for him) and immediately breaks the rules of the task by picking up potatoes with his hands to balance them on the pair of ‘chopsticks’, which he is holding together in his other hand.

He appears to have decided that the potatoes may only be put into the baskets with the ‘chopsticks’, so intends to use them as a potato delivery platform.

He continues with this technique despite Alex’s early protests, getting all of his potatoes into the basket long before anyone else.

Alex confirms at the end that he is, in fact, disqualified for touching the potatoes with his hands.
