Dai’s vegetable-based therapy

Dai sits across from Paul at the desk, wearing a red headband, and with a pair of scissors at hand. He asks Paul what his biggest fear is, and Paul reveals that he is afraid of sharks.

Dai instructs Paul, in a calm voice, to imagine that the flame of the candle is a shark. He reinforces this imagination exercise with some extra description.

There is a mysterious vegetable (probably some kind of heirloom squash) hanging from a string directly above the candle, which Dai calls an “Argentinian kumquat”. Dai explains that it represents Paul, and is going to conquer the shark.

He then tells Paul to look into his eyes, and then at the ‘Argentinian kumquat’, and then at the ‘shark’. Dai then cuts the string, causing the vegetable to fall directly onto the candle and extinguish its flame.

He explains that Paul’s tension and fear have also now been extinguished.

He then calls for “hors d’oeuvres” and leaves the room.

In the studio, Paul explains that he’s pretty sure the vegetable was not an Argentinian kumquat, leading Dai to respond that he’s “a therapist, not a greengrocer” (thus coining the episode title).

He earns first place.
