John’s entertainment industry reality check

John begins by acknowledging that many people might think that working in the entertainment industry is very glamorous.

To counteract this perception, he brings in a candid photo of the comedian Paul McCaffrey, which was taken by a member of the public and shared on social media. John states that he thinks the picture captures “the true bleakness of being a travelling comedian better than any image in the history of civilisation”.

In the photo, Paul is sat alone at a table in a Nando’s restaurant, staring blankly into space as he eats his meal. John describes Paul’s expression as a mix of “self-hatred” and “bafflement at how life turned out this way”.
