Biography

Timothy Mark Vine (born on 4 March 1967) is an English writer, actor, comedian and presenter.

His stand-up act consists primarily of a series of quick-fire one-liners and puns.

He performs comedy songs in his act, and also plays the guitar, piano, and drums. He has performed in several bands, including The Flared Generation, described as “the most unfashionable punk band in the country” by Smash Hits magazine, alongside his brother Jeremy.

Many of his jokes are told in the style of Tommy Cooper, and have been falsely attributed to the late comedian. The West End show about Tommy Cooper actually features some of Tim’s jokes.

He has regularly appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with shows such as The Tim Vine Shambles and The Tim Vine Fiasco, which won him the Perrier newcomer award in 1995.

In 1997 and 1998, he presented the Channel 5 game show Whittle. In 1997 he also devised and hosted the Channel 4 game show Fluke.

Between 2001 and 2004, he appeared on ITV’s The Sketch Show with Lee Mack.

In 2003 he contributed to The Sit-Down Comedy Book.

He hosted the TV show Fort Boyard Takes on the World in 2004.

In 2006, he had a large advertising hoarding erected in Edinburgh featuring his name and image, with a small sub-heading “...is not appearing at this year’s Edinburgh Festival.”

He has completed UK comedy tours including Current Puns in 2006 and Punslinger in 2008.

Between 2006 and 2014 he worked with Lee Mack on the BBC One sitcom Not Going Out, playing the role of Timothy Gladstone Adams.

In 2007 he appeared in Comic Relief Does Fame Academy, and launched his first podcast, Tim Vine Celebrates.

He appeared at the Christian festival, Spring Harvest, in 2007, 2008 and 2013 alongside John Archer, and at the Cambridge Theatre in 2007 for a show entitled Tim Vine, Live in Concrete.

In 2008 he appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, performing a show entitled Punslinger, and also recorded a performance at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London which was released as a DVD entitled So I Said To This Bloke....

His third tour, The Joke-amotive, took place in 2010, with a DVD of the show released in 2011.

In 2010 and 2014, he won the award for best joke at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He was the runner up in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

In 2010 he starred in the Richmond production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, an published his first solo joke book, The Biggest Ever Tim Vine Joke Book.

In 2011 he published a second joke book entitled The Not Quite Biggest Ever Tim Vine Joke Book, specifically for children.

In 2012 he hosted one series of the teatime game show Don’t Blow the Inheritance for ITV, and starred in the Richmond production of the pantomime Aladdin.

In 2013 he was a finalist in Let’s Dance for Comic Relief. The same year, his third book, The Tim Vine Bumper Book of Silliness: Daft Jokes, Crazy Pictures, Utter Nonsense, was published.

In 2014 he joined the cast of the BBC comedy Blandings as Sebastian Beach.

In 2014 and 2015, he appeared in the revival of Celebrity Squares as one of the resident comedians, alongside Joe Wilkinson, and starred in a Cinderella pantomime show at New Wimbledon Theatre.

In 2015 he competed in Let’s Play Darts and was runner-up, losing out to Lee Mack. He returned in 2016 to win it, beating Mike Tindall in the final.

In 2016 and 2017 he presented the BBC Radio 4 series The Tim Vine Chat Show, and starred in the Dick Whittington pantomime at New Wimbledon Theatre.

In 2017 he appeared in two episodes of Tim Vine Travels in Time on BBC One.

In 2018 he appeared in series 6 of Taskmaster, on Dave.

In 2019 he appeared on Countdown as a guest in Dictionary Corner.
