Melanie uses the science of “suck and blow”

As Melanie arrives on the stage, Alex announces that they are in the garden, then points out how nice it is. Melanie agrees, and then mentions that it’s “getting a bit chilly, though”. In the studio, Greg observes to Alex that “you and Mel have entered the awkward post-kiss phase of your relationship”, before adding “Actually talking about the weather”. Alex admits that he was still flustered at that point, and Greg then suggests that Melanie was “seconds away from ghosting you at that point”.

Melanie first looks inside the fifth bucket from the left, and finds the plastic tubing within. She appears to have some understanding of how siphoning works, placing one end of the tube into the bucket before sucking on the other end, but the end in the bucket falls out before she can get the water flowing all the way through.

Since she has managed to get some water into the tube, though, she places the loose end into the bottle instead, and then attempts to blow the water into it with her mouth, which does not work as well as she’d hoped.

Melanie persists with this technique of emptying the contents of the tube into the bottle, before switching to placing both ends of the tube into the bottle.

In the studio, when Greg notes that Melanie had basically used the tube as a “vessel” to transport the water, she notes that she knew there was some science to the “suck and blow” technique, but didn’t exactly understand how it was supposed to work.

Alex reveals that Melanie had gotten 480ml of water into her bottle which, after David and Hannah’s disqualifications, earns her 5 points.
