Task brief

The task brief is laid on top of the lid of the middle of five metal buckets on the stage. The brief for the task is as follows:

Transfer the most water from the bucket to the bottle using only the contents of one of these bins.

You may open one bin every minute, but you must use the contents of the bin you open last.

You may not touch or move the bucket or the bottle.

Most water in the bottle after five minutes wins.

Task notes

On the left-hand side of the stage, there is a low table with a glass bottle on it.
On the right-hand side of the stage, there is a coloured metal bucket containing water, on a plinth.
The five buckets (referred to in the task brief as ‘bins’) are lined up along the front of the stage in the garden, and they all have lids to conceal their contents.
The contents of bucket 1 are not revealed.
Bucket 2 contains a small ramekin made of ice.
Bucket 3 contains a teaspoon.
Bucket 4 contains a pair of knitted gloves.
Bucket 5 contains a length of thin plastic tubing, long enough to easily reach between the bucket and the bottle.
The set-up of the task, with the water source at a higher elevation than the destination, is clearly designed with siphon usage in mind.
