Julian doesn’t trust Alex

In the living room, Julian finds particular amusement in the task-starting conditions specified in the task brief, as he says that “‘Confident’ and ‘Alex’ are two words one doesn’t associate”.

He places the labels next to the switches, initially believing that the ‘Danger’ label belongs to the covered switch, but then deciding that he does not trust Alex.

Julian also notices that one of the switches (the UV light one) is already on when the task begins, so he turns it off.

He quickly gives up on labelling the switches, and then seems to just arbitrarily play with them for the remainder of his time.

In the lab, Julian starts the task in the UV light. He balances one tee on its side, and as he’s starting to balance a second, the vibrating platform turns on.

Julian continues his method of balancing tees on their sides, placing them some distance apart from one other.

Eventually, all of the lights turn off, and Julian has no problem expressing his annoyance at the situation to Alex.

Not much else is seen of Julian’s attempt, but given how much smoke is in the lab at the end of his time, he must have turned on the smoke machine switch early, and left it on for much of his allotted time.

In the studio, Alex reveals that Julian’s vibrating machine was faulty, and Julian had been stuck on the machine for a full minute after the task was completed, before he could safely leave it. Julian simply replies that one must “get your thrills where you can” at his age.

Julian is ultimately disqualified because he turned on the ‘Danger’ switch.
