Task briefs

The first task brief is laid on a wooden switch board in the living room. The second task brief is laid on top of a bowl full of golf tees on the table in the lab. The briefs for the task are as follows:

Do whatever you like with these switches for five minutes.

You will then do a task in the lab for five minutes.

The conditions in the lab will change according to when you switch the switches in here.

Your time starts when Alex is confident you understand the task.

Balance the most tees on the shelves.

You must stay on the platform throughout the task.

You have five minutes.

Your time starts when Alex is confident you understand the task.

Task notes

  • The switch board in the living room is a wooden board onto which seven old-fashioned Bakelite switches have been mounted. Five of the switched are black, and two (the ones on either end) are red.
  • Inside of the task brief, there are several paper labels which read ‘Vibration’, ‘Big light’, ‘Leaves’, ‘Sound’, ‘UV light’, ‘Smoke’, and ‘Danger’. These labels are meant to correspond with what the switches do, but no indication is given as to which label belongs to which switch.
  • The ‘Vibration’ switch controls a vibrating platform upon which the contestants must stand, in the lab, during the second part of the task.
  • The ‘Big light’ switch controls the main lighting in the lab.
  • The ‘Leaves’ switch makes leaves fall down from the ceiling of the lab, over the table.
  • The ‘Sound’ switch controls an audio recording of someone repeatedly saying the contestant’s name, in the lab.
  • The ‘UV light’ switch controls the UV lighting in the lab.
  • The ‘Smoke’ switch controls a smoke machine in the lab.
  • Based on what happened during the task, it appears that, when seated at the desk: the left-most (red) switch controlled the vibrating platform in the lab; the second-from-left (black) switch controlled the main light in the lab; and the fifth black switch released leaves from the ceiling of the lab. The functions of the other black switches are unclear.
  • The ‘Danger’ switch turns out to be the switch on the far right of the board, which has a plastic cover over it, with the word ‘DON’T’ printed on it. Near the end of the task, it is revealed that this switch turns on a sign which is hung from the front of the desk, which displays the word ‘DISQUALIFIED’, and leads to instant disqualification.
  • By default, the only switch that was on at the beginning of the task was the UV light switch, so the contestants would have some sort of light in the lab when they entered, in the event that they did not touch any of the switches during the first part of the task.
  • The contestants enter the lab for the second part of the task to find a bowl of golf tees on the table, and a very narrow set of ‘shelves’, which are barely wider than the golf tees themselves.
  • During the second part of the task, the contestants must remain standing on a platform behind the table, which may or may not vibrate them and the table, depending on whether they played with the corresponding switch in the living room.
