Colombo Kev gets answers
Unbeknownst to the other contestants – and possibly the production team – Kevin had taken at least one year of German during his time at the University of Montreal, and still remembers enough to converse with Boris.
In German, Kevin introduces himself to Boris, and says that he wants to have a beer.
In French, Kevin then asks Boris if he understands French. When Boris affirms that he does, Kevin continues his questioning in French.
For the birthday question, Kevin recognises that the task does not specify that they need to find out the birth year, so he does not attempt to translate that part of Boris’ response.
He is able to specifically identify that Boris is describing a margherita pizza, as opposed to just ‘pizza’ in general, as some of the other contestants had.
Kevin listens to Boris’ explanation of his father’s job with an overwhelmed expression, but Boris eventually says a word that allows Kevin to recognise that his father works as an engineer.
Boris’ description of Kevin is not shown.
Kevin is able to immediately translate Boris’ greatest wish.
When Antoine expresses his surprise that Kevin had only taken one year of German, Kevin jokes that he’d actually failed the course.
In the studio, Phil points out that Kevin was the only person who didn’t need to resort to idiotic miming. Kevin crows that he didn’t need to – he just turned into “Colombo Kev”.
Kevin earns first place, with five out of five correct answers.
