Mauri bets on game theory
Prior to the footage of Mauri’s attempt being shown, David makes a point to hype his solution up as “brilliant” and “revolutionary”. Usually such grand statements from David are dripping with sarcasm but, surprisingly, in this case, he is apparently being (mostly) sincere.
As the task does not begin until David tells the contestants to open their mouths, Mauri requests that he explain his strategy to David before he does so: Mauri will simply take a sip of kombucha directly from the tap. He explains that he believes that at least two of the other contestants will be eliminated due to accidentally closing their mouths before they actually drink any of the kombucha (he specifically names Behrouz and Maria), so he intends to get on the scoreboard by at least registering a result.
After David officially starts the task, Mauri lies on the ground and pours some of the kombucha directly into his mouth. However, Mauri then closes his mouth while swallowing the kombucha, which he had not intended to do, and which prematurely ends his attempt.
In the studio, Mauri explains that his plan had been to drink some of the kombucha to log an initial result, and then use the hosepipe to continue drinking from further away.
Ultimately, Mauri drinks kombucha from 42cm away, and earns fourth place.
