John catches a fish
John first investigates behind the fishing rod, as soundman Neil attaches the sign to his back.
He then makes his way to the caravan, where he finds the locked safe box. Realising that he needs a key to open it, he first checks the fishing rod, to no avail. He then finds the key inside the dome but, when he opens the box, he discovers that it had been a waste of time, as the string simply travels back out through a hole, and there are no other useful clues present.
John decides to head inside the house, following through the bin in the kitchen, then into the living room, where he notices that it disappears into the fake bookshelf. Opening up the hidden compartment in the bookshelf, he finds the big fish inside, and then expresses his frustration that he could’ve just said ‘fish’ at the start.
In the studio, when Greg pushes John to explain his methodology, John argues that it was unlikely that any of the contestants would assume that the sound man would betray them. When Alex reveals that the production team had hoped that someone would go with their initial gut instinct and say ‘fish’ immediately, John responds that he doesn’t understand why anyone would do that. Alex explains that everything in the task – from the ‘red herrings’ to the outfit the contestants were wearing – should have led them to think about fish.
Ultimately, though, John had guessed ‘fish’ after 9 minutes and 16 seconds, and is awarded 4 points.
