Andy admits to being a lapsed Jew

As Andy sits down in the optometry chair, he knocks his head against the lens-holding device, prompting Alex to point out that it’s the first time that Andy’s cricket helmet has proven useful.

Having read the task brief, Andy inspects the eye chart and notes that “it feels like there should be a clue in there somewhere”.

Andy then sits back down on the chair and creates a pair of imaginary glasses on his face using his fingers, asking Alex “Is this enough?”, but Alex tells him that they’re “not very special”.

Disappointed, Andy looks around and then starts fiddling with the top of the plinth, observing that “That feels like it might come off”, before investigating the attachments to the chair instead. He then investigates the eye chart and the plinth again, while repeating the phrase “Special glasses” to himself. As he again stops fiddling with the top of the plinth and walks away from it, he says “I feel I’m missing one of your clues again”. Andy then looks behind the eye chart, finding nothing.

After stating again that he’s missing something, Andy returns to investigating the top of the plinth, and finally confirms that it is removable. As he removes the special glasses from within (which have frames shapes and coloured like flamingos), he states that “that was kind of obvious, wasn’t it?”, before questioning whether the glasses are special, and deciding that it “Depends on your attitude to flamingos”.

As Alex confirms that he has completed the task, Andy frustratedly notes that he could’ve done so “within seconds”.

In the studio, after Alex points out that Andy had repeatedly tried to read the eye chart forwards, Andy notes the irony of him being Jewish and not thinking for one moment that the text might be written right-to-left, like Hebrew is. He then admits that he’s actually a “very lapsed Jew”.

Alex reveals that Andy had put on his special glasses after 4 minutes and 53 seconds, which wins him the task and earns him 5 points.
