Jack travels 200 metric Jack paces

After Jack puts the hat on and Alex tells him it looks pretty good on him, Jack responds “Yeah. I suit hats”.

Jack’s first instinct is to call his agent, but his call goes to voicemail, prompting Alex to ask him if he’s “One of the main clients, do you think?”. He then calls his son, Miles, and asks him to work out how long a furlong is, before telling him that he’ll ring him back. Jack then says he’s going to wait a minute or so to give Miles time to do the necessary research, before asking Alex whether it counts if Miles calls him back.

Jack calls his son back again, but is unable to even restate the question to him in five seconds, let alone get a response. With his third call, he repeats the question to Miles and then quickly tells his son to call him back.

When Miles calls him back, Jack confidently states that he can take the call, telling Alex that “We agreed, I think”. His son tells him that a furlong is 200 metres, so Jack sets off marching around the garden while counting, apparently under the impression that each of his strides is exactly one metre long.

After several circuits around the garden, Jack tells Alex to stop the clock, as he thinks 10 minutes have passed.

In the studio, after Greg notes that Jack was the only person who’d gotten someone to call him back, Emma states that she has a problem with that, since the use of technology, outside of the three phone calls, was prohibited by the task. Alex agrees with her, but then says “then the phone rang, and it was his son, and it might have been an emergency”. When Emma reiterates her thought that “picking up a phone is using tech”, Alex responds that “You always say that”. He then points out that Emma had also looked at her watch, during her attempt, and had claimed that “It’s not technology, it’s decorative”. When she questions whether her watch counts as technology, Jack quickly points out that “it’s not a brussels sprout”.

Greg then states how impressed he is with Jack’s confidence that each of his steps is exactly one metre long, prompting Jack to confidently declare “It is. So, no more discussion on that. It is.”

Alex reveals that Jack had ended his attempt after 8 minutes and 10 seconds, and had walked 180 yards, so was 40 yards short of a furlong. He therefore earns 2 points.
