Johan’s somewhat strategic penalties

Johan starts out matching David’s timings very closely, and reaches the maths portion of the task only one second behind him.

Johan is unable to solve the sum, and is more concerned with matching David’s times than actually completing the tasks, so he abandons the maths problem and hits the timer when it exactly matches David’s time (1:51), choosing to take the penalty, rather than waste more time trying to solve it.

Johan falls four seconds behind David while placing the rubber bands on his face.

When he reaches the part of the task involving the locked box, he does not have the code due to not solving the maths problem. After briefly considering that it may be one of the numbers already written in the sum, he takes another penalty and just hits the clock. At this point, Johan’s clock is 14 seconds ahead of David’s, prior to any penalties.

Johan makes up some time by blowing up his balloon very quickly, but is then unable to tie it, as the neck of the balloon tears when he removes it from the pump, so he earns another penalty. At this point, Johan’s clock is 2 seconds behind David’s.

Johan is confused by the fact that he has to put the banana peel inside the tub of Vaseline, but does not hesitate to scoop out the entire jar with his ungloved fingers and drop it all on the table.

Johan is helped quite a bit by the fact that David takes an entire minute to make his balloon dog. The fact that Johan does not have a balloon to model into a dog means that he incurs another penalty, but he finally realises that his mistakes have worked in his favour, in this instance. Unfortunately, he takes nearly 20 seconds to come to this realisation and actually hit his timer, at which point his clock is about 40 seconds behind David’s.

Finally, Johan is forced to take another time penalty, as he has no balloon dog to pop. As he hits his timer for the last time, he has a time of 4:47, while David has a time of 5:27.

David offers his hand to Johan to shake, but Johan reminds him that his hand is covered in Vaseline.

In the studio, Johan admits that he should have spent the time on solving the maths problem, but is glad to have been able to finish the task without actually completing all of the actions.

Johan amasses 50 seconds worth of penalties but, thanks to the fact that he’d finished 40 seconds ahead of David, this results in a mere 10 second difference, and Johan wins the task.
