Alex mistakes John’s self-regulation as celebration
John manages to get a fair amount of the toilet paper off his roll before he tears it.
After finishing his time penalty, he adopts a technique of wrapping the unravelled toilet paper back around his own hand, to keep it under control.
He then manages to pass a lot of the paper through the roll before it breaks again and he has to take another time penalty. Presumably due to being overwhelmed by trying to keep track of all five contestants, Alex misses the incident, and misinterprets John’s raised arms as a victory celebration, checking with him that all of his paper had actually gone through the roll. John then attempts to resume the task too early, after assuming that Alex had not been tracking his time, but Alex screams “Not yet!” at him, and insists that he actually is keeping track.
The rest of John’s attempt apparently goes smoothly, and he claims to have completed the task second, after Steve.
However, after everyone returns to their seats, Alex points out to Greg that only Joanne’s tube has been completely stripped of its paper. Everyone else is, including John, is disqualified for not having completed the task.
