Nick's bottle-based night music
Nick collects together a large number of glass bottles, filling them with different amounts of water in order to tune them to various notes as he blows across the tops of them.
He begins his performance by entering the room as a conductor, holding a wooden skewer as his baton. He then sits down at the table, on which there are eight bottles lined up with different pitches. As he begins to blow into the bottles, the tune he is playing is easily recognisable as Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The audience roars with applause as Nick takes his bow.
In the studio, Nick acknowledges that his performance was a bit smug, and Greg responds by stating that all conductors are pretty smug. Nick agrees, stating that conductors aren’t even needed most of the time and Greg agrees, claiming that he’s watched orchestras performing, and the musicians aren’t paying any attention to the conductor most of the time.
Greg awards Nick 5 points for his accomplished performance.
[Note: Nick has a background as a classical musician, playing violin with the University Orchestra at Durham and the Cambridge University Musical Society, and serving as the conductor of the Durham Hill Orchestra between 2002 and 2003. In 2009, he performed a sketch as a conductor on the BBC’s Comedy Shuffle programme.]
