Joanne juices oranges with a spatula and a hosepipe
After reading the initial task brief in the living room, Joanne confesses to Alex that a “spatula” is her favourite item of kitchen equipment. She then screams “ear” at him, before declaring a “hosepipe” as her gardening tool of choice.
Having read the second task brief in the lab, Joanne manages to get an orange into the vase and then starts trying to jam the spatula into it. However, due to the flexible nature of the spatula, it repeatedly glances off of the surface of the orange, leading her to note that she should’ve specifically asked for a metal spatula instead.
To improve her technique, Joanne begins first jamming the end of the hosepipe into the oranges to create an initial hole, before then using the spatula to break the orange down further. She calls her technique “entering with the hose, and attacking with the spatula”.
Joanne’s improved technique seems to work well but, with her time running out, she begins to lose patience, and ends up frantically stabbing the oranges with both tools simultaneously.
After blowing his whistle, Alex observes to Joanne that she hadn’t used her ears, and she responds by noting that they aren’t pointy enough for the job.
In the studio, Greg describes Joanne’s attempt as “sociopathic”, noting that she had looked like a serial killer at times, and paraphrasing her with a creepy voice, saying “I enter with the hose, and I attack with the spatula”.
Joanne collects 116 millilitres of juice in her vase, and earns 4 points.
