Episode 4: Toshwash

Image of the shadow of a figurine against the surface of an inflated red balloon (a combined reference to the 'Drop a water balloon as far as possible without it bursting' task, and the 'Persuade the security guard to look in your bag' task), with the episode title, 'Toshwash', superimposed on it.

Episode synopsis

In this episode the contestants must bring in the cheekiest food, make a phone ring, persuade a security guard to look in their shopping bag, drop a water balloon as far as possible without it bursting, and roll an edible sphere across a line as slowly as possible.

Title context

'Toshwash' was a word used by Richard the security guard to describe Richard Herring's argument in the 'Persuade the security guard to look in your bag' task.

Alternate Titles

  • On Denmark's TV2 Play streaming platform, this episode is titled 'Det rene pladder', which translates as 'It's pure jabber'. In Danish, to say that someone 'pladdrar' means that they're talking nonsense.
  • On Finland's MTV Katsomo streaming platform, this episode is titled 'Hyllynpylly'. 'Hyllynpylly' is apparently a nonsense word; the closest word to it, 'hyllypylly', basically means 'lardass'. [Translator credit: zador]
  • On Sweden's SVT Play streaming platform, this episode is titled 'Utmaning utan mottagning', which translates as 'Challenge without reception'. This title is catchier in Swedish, because it rhymes. It's unclear what it might be a reference to - perhaps the 'Make the phone ring' task? [Translator credit: DANI]

    Taskmaster Intro

Hello, I'm Greg Davies, and this is Taskmaster. Welcome back to our light-hearted entertainment show, a place where talented comedians prove there's more to them than just raising a smile - or, as I call it, The Theatre of Pain! You want to win my golden head? Well, this is where you pay the ferry man. And he's drunk on his own power, baby! OK, good. We're ready.

    Assistant Intro

And here, a jittery, feral man with a bearded protuberance he calls a face. It's little Alex Horne!

    Taskmaster's Sign-off

So, what have we learned today? If you ever find yourself in a challenging situation and you can't get the result you want, get yourself to the Deep South of America, 'cause there's a guy there who, every day, has to jump off a crane into a paddling pool. Every day, allegedly. That's a wrap for four. Halfway point next time, but for now, let's hear it for Daisy May Cooper!
