Task brief

The task brief is laid on the steps of the Taskmaster house. The brief for the task is as follows:

Create the best picture of a bird on the black square.

You may not step on or do anything to the black square.

Alex will walk towards you every time you name a different bird.

Alex will stop moving every time you name a different fish.

You have a maximum of 15 minutes.

Your time starts when Alex withdraws his nail.

Task notes

  • The contestant teams meet outside the front of the Taskmaster house, where a large black square sheet is laid out on the driveway.
  • Alex is standing on one edge of the square, holding a length of drainpipe filled with paint, which is held in only by a nail in the end of a narrow plastic tube at the bottom.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • After Greg points out that Fern was either really cold or needed a wee during the task (she was jigging around uncomfortably at the start of the footage), she admits that it was probably both, because of her costume. The team names the following species during the task: magpie, goldfish, seagull, carp, owl, turkey (accidentally), and penguin. Dara begins to get frustrated during the task, as he can clearly see a bird in the linework that the other two can't. The team tries to strategise together, out of Alex's earshot, to bank some bird and fish names they can use when needed. At this point, Fern asks whether an eel is a 'fish or a snake'. The team continues to be confused about what they have drawn, with Dara insisting it is clearly visible and the others just not seeing it, and heading inside while he continues to argue his vision. Ths continues in studio, with Dara describing exactly where the bird's head, body and wings are, and his teammates insisting that no bird is present. Alex displays an alternative rendering of the drawing: an animated chicken with a tiny head (on the opposite side to where Dara insisted it should be), which lays an egg. Greg refuses to accept Dara's description of where the bird in the drawing is, and awards the team two points out of pity.
  • Munya initially claims that his university degree was about fish and birds, but it soon transpires that he actually studied psychology. The team names the following species during the task: pigeon, carp, seagull, seabream, eagle, goldfish, blowfish, pike, hawk, angelfish, falcon, nuthatch, and Mexican parrot. At some point, when trying to figure out how to add an eye to their drawing, Munya suggests that one of them try to get above Alex, so he has to pick his tube up, and the paint will stop dripping. He then gets up on a stepladder to try this strategy out, which is partially successful. The team are pleased with their drawing, and step away before they ruin it. Greg describes it as a bird leaning into the wind, and Alex displays a version of the drawing rendered in pencil in the colours of a kingfisher. While Greg is in no doubt that they were the winning team, he stresses that their bird is also not good, but awards them five points.
