Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Eva unwittingly removes some of the string from the reel before she has finished reading the task brief, so loses some time there. Running to the shed, she finds a garden cane she can put through the centre of the reel, asks Mark to hold onto the loose end of the string, and runs off down the driveway with the rest, unreeling it as she goes. She just about reaches the end of the driveway before her time runs out. Disatisfied with her performance, she asks whether she can have another go. The string is wound back onto the reel, and she starts again from the beginning. She tries to wind the string onto the wheel of a wheelie bin but, when this doesn't work out, ends up repeating her performance from the first attempt, this time making out onto and down the road a distance. Lasse allows her second attempt, but she still comes last in the task.
  • Martin loosens the end of the string before he has formulated a plan and, realising that the clock has started, desperately begins unravelling the string in the garden by violently tugging it off the reel and flinging it into the air. Incredibly, he is able to successfully remove all of the string in this way with just 2 seconds left to spare, earning third place.
  • Julie attempts to use a hammer to knock the cardboard core of the reel out from the middle without actually unravelling any of the string. When this fails, she just begins manually unravelling the string with her hands. She manages to remove 153m of the string before her time runs out, and earns fourth place.
  • Simon uses a box-cutter knife to cut through the reel of string, to remove it faster. He succeeds in removing all of the string in just 25 seconds, earning first place.
  • Sebastian uses an angle grinder to cut through the reel of string, to remove it faster. Towards the end of his attempt, he switches to using a manual hand saw to remove the final few coils. He manages to remove all of the string in 49 seconds, earning second place.
