Task brief
The task brief is found on the table in the lab. The brief for the task is as follows:
Find out what this gentleman did for a living.
You can ask him any question, but you must whisper at all times.
The gentleman can only nod or shake his head.
The gentleman can only lie.
Fastest wins.
Your time starts now.
Task notes
- The contestants are silently greeted in the lab by an elderly gentleman, seated at one end of the table.
- In the studio, Alex explains that his name is Hugh and he’s 83 years old. He notes that this is the same age as Michael Caine, but that they couldn’t get Michael Caine to do it, and everyone already knows what his job is anyway.

Attempts
Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!
- Hugh greets Rob, and politely shakes his hand. Rob then asks Alex if Hugh is his dad. He quite quickly figures out that Hugh had worked for the NHS and was a doctor. After Alex informs him that he needs to find out exactly what type of doctor Hugh worked as, Rob says “That’s niche. Are you mad?” He asks Hugh whether he is a “brain doctor”, a dentist, or “Doctor Pepper”, and becomes gradually more frustrated with each guess. He then asks if Hugh is a psychologist, and claims that he made need one. He eventually has the idea to ask Hugh to mime his profession. When Hugh clasps his hand over his mouth, Rob immediately guesses that he is an anaesthetist. Hugh drops his head onto the table in relief. In the studio, Alex confirms that Rob had also guessed “Captain Birdseye” and “head of the NHS”, and that he’d said the word ‘doctor’ 49 times in total. Rob completes the task in 10 minutes and 49 seconds, earning 2 points.
- Paul quickly discovers that Hugh is a doctor, and when Alex asks him to find out specifically what kind of doctor he is, he responds “For fuck’s sake!” He guesses GP, psychiatrist, surgeon, and nurse, and then asks Hugh “Did you get involved with the nurses?” (we don’t see Hugh’s answer to this). Paul continues to suggest different types of doctors, and eventually works out that Hugh gave patients something, and had worked in surgical operating rooms. He then asks Hugh “Are you an anaesthetic doctor?”. Alex tries to get Paul to say the word ‘anaesthetist’, but Paul has difficulty with the pronunciation. In the studio, Greg confirms that he also struggles with the word ‘anaesthetist’ and asks Paul if he can say it now (which he can’t). Alex confirms that Paul had also guessed “yoga instructor”, “rent boy”, “baby sitter”, “hygiene doctor”, and “Dr Dre”. During his attempt, Paul apparently said the word ‘doctor’ 63 times, made 15 sexual references, and swore 23 times. He completes the task in 42 minutes and 7 seconds, and earns just 1 point.
- Sara quickly identifies that Hugh had worked in medicine, and tries to narrow it down with questions such as “Did you go in the ambulance?” and “Did you use an X-ray machine?”. In the studio, Alex confirms that she’d also asked, “Did you make babies in a test tube?” and “Did you specialise in urinary tract infections?”. She completes the task in 8 minutes and 31 seconds, and earns 3 points.
- Both Dave and Hugh are dress in blue checked flannel shirts, and the first question Dave asks is “Is everyone going to get a version of their future self?”. He starts by asking Hugh if he’d needed a university education to do his job. His next question is “Does your job begin with the letter ‘A’?”. He is shocked when the answer to this is “yes”, and initially struggles to think of any jobs beginning with ‘A’, before guessing “architect”, “archer”, and “ambulance driver”. He then discovers that Hugh worked in medicine, and immediately guesses that he is an anaesthetist. He completes the task in 4 minutes and 21 seconds, and his so pleased with his time that he can’t imagine anyone getting it quicker. However, he ultimately earns second place, and 4 points.
- Al shakes Hugh’s hand and asks, “Is your job highly skilled?”. After Alex reminds him to whisper all of his questions, he asks “Do you work with machinery?”, and then “Are you a doctor?”. After this, he quickly homes in on the correct answer, guessing that Hugh is a GP, then a surgeon, before landing at anaesthetist. In the studio, Al confirms that he knew that Hugh didn’t do a manual job, because he had soft hands. He also notes that he has a cousin who was an anaesthetist. Al completes the task in just 2 minutes and 8 seconds. Greg initially jokes that because Al hadn’t whispered at the start of his attempt, he’d be disqualified, but then he awards him first place and 5 points.
