Mathias draws from prior work experience

After reading the task brief, Mathias immediately hits the bubble machine’s power switch, before realising that it lacks a power cord.

He searches underneath the table for it, and finds the radio control instead. He then spots the battery on top of the car, and reasons that the torch on the table must also have a battery inside of it. However, he does not make the logical leap to use the batteries to power the bubble machine; instead, he uses both batteries to power the torch, and shines it around the (already very well-lit) lab, in search of clues.

Mathias eventually abandons the torch and turns his attention to the bathrobe instead, believing it to be important to the task. He attempts to retrieve the bathrobe by using the tape measure but, naturally, the tape measure bends in half before it can reach its destination. Mathias cannot help but make a suggestive joke about this, claiming that the tape measure is “a little nervous”.

After another unsuccessful attempt with the tape measure, Mathias instead uses the cactus to hook the bathrobe off of the wall, crediting his success with his past experience working in a clothing store (just as Puk had done).

Mathias finds the power supply inside the bathrobe, and quickly realises that some of the required batteries can be found within the car’s radio control.

In footage that does not make the edit of his attempt, he also relocates the batteries that he’d placed inside the torch to the bubble machine. He then turns on the machine, accidentally knocking over the cactus in the process.

Mathias completes the task in 10 minutes and 17 seconds, and earns second place.
