Joonas advocates for global warming

Joonas’ chosen topic is ‘How to create a more positive climate around the usage of pineapple and other fruits within Finnish pizza culture’.

Just as in English, the Finnish word for ‘climate’ (‘ilmasto’) can mean both the actual climate as well as being figurative (i.e. ‘in the current political climate’).

In his presentation, Joonas acknowledges that there is a poor attitude climate towards pineapple in Finland, but that there is also a poor literal climate towards pineapple, and it is the latter on which he has focused his presentation, as he believes it is more inhospitable towards cultivating pineapple.

As the climate in Finland is too cold to grow tropical fruits, Joonas proposes a simple (and destructive) solution: hasten global warming. He sells this as a solution that everyone can chip in on, with actions as simple as switching from hybrid to diesel cars, and leaving their cars idling and undriven for days or weeks at a time.

When Kaarina asks Joonas how he’d checked his facts for his presentation, Joonas replies that “often, the facts that come from your own mind are just as correct as those found on the Internet”.

In the studio, Jaakko asks Joonas when he will actually enter politics (Joonas has imitated many politicians on various television sketch comedy shows). Joonas replies that based on how surprisingly well his presentation seems to have gone, he suspects he will as soon as he has an opportunity. Jaakko muses that, based on Joonas’ presentation, there will likely be an increase in the trading-in of hybrid cars to diesel cars.

Joonas calls his entire strategy “a centrist’s wet dream”: not needing to drive an electric car, but also providing EU subsidies to farmers. When Jaakko questions whether Joonas is, based on that statement, a member of the Centre Party, Joonas replies that he apparently is, and then apologises.

Jaakko awards Joonas second place.
