Hayley gets deeper into her pirate character

After listening to the tape, Hayley immediately admits that she wasn’t listening. After looking at the map and repeating some of the instructions (almost carrying out the necessary steps with her finger), she says “Let’s go!”, while grabbing the old-fashioned telescope.

She then pauses and decides that she can just circle the ‘X’ on the map, prompting Paul to confirm that she had completed part of the task. As she starts to leave the study, she asks Paul if they’re going to the dock, and he tells her that’s up to her. She decides to go to the dock anyway, saying “Unless I’ve completely misunderstood this, Paul…”.

Hayley rows herself across the lake, and then finds the mound of earth and spade on the other side. After skipping around the mound, she asks Paul whether she’s completed the task. She then digs through the mound of earth, stating that if there is nothing in there, she will be quite unhappy. After confirming to Paul that there is nothing to be found in the mound, he says “Yeah, what are you digging for?”, prompting her to admit that there was a hole and so she’d just started digging.

Hayley returns to the study and listens to the tape again. At this point, she is wearing an eye-patch and a pirate hat, and has stripes of ink on her cheeks. When the message on the tape says “Turn ‘U’ into a pirate”, Hayley says “Oh, I’m a pirate” in a gruff voice.

After Paul insists to her a couple of times that she has not completed the task yet, she finally realises that she needs to turn the letter ‘U’ on the map into a pirate. She then carries out all of the other instructions on the map.

In the studio, when Jeremy notes that Hayley had been very focused on acting like a pirate, she explains that she’d thought perhaps she hadn’t quite nailed the “turn you into a pirate” instruction, and so had tried to go deeper into the character.

It’s revealed that Hayley completed the task in 35 minutes and 55 seconds, which earns her 2 points.
