Tom takes several trips to the lake
Tom listens to the tape with an excited look upon his face, and puts the eye-patch on. When the message on the tape says “turn you into a pirate” Tom gestures at himself and says “Tick, done!”.
Tom picks up the map and the magnifying glass and, still wearing the eye-patch shouts “Come on!”, before running outside. Tom runs across the lawn and yells back to Paul “I hope you have a boat!”.
He gets into the rowboat and rows alone across the lake, commenting that having just one eye is quite hard. On the other side of the lake, Tom is joined by Paul, and finds the mound of earth with a spade stuck into it. He instinctively begins to dig and finds nothing, before realising that he hadn’t actually listened to the instructions. When he asks Paul if the instructions were to go to the ‘X’ and dig up some treasure, Paul unhelpfully reminds him that “all the information you need is on the task”.
Tom decides to return to the study, where he re-listens to the cassette. After hearing the instruction to “circle where ‘X’ marks the spot”, Tom sighs and runs back to the mound of earth on the other side of the lake. After walking around the mound, he looks at Paul and claims that he’s circled ‘X’, but Paul just asks him what he means.
Tom rows back across the lake once more, and returns again to the study. After listening again to the cassette (while still wearing the eye-patch and lifejacket), he laughs and announces that he needs to go back and get the map, which he has left by the mound of earth.
Once he’s found his way back to the map, he spots the seven ‘C’s on it and realises that he needs to change the letter ‘U’ into a pirate (which he does by drawing a little parrot near the letter). He then completes the rest of the instructions on the map.
In the studio, when Jeremy asks if, once he’d found out the trick, he had wanted to hurt Paul in any way, Tom confirms that he’d wanted to hurt Paul throughout the experience.
Paul confirms that Tom had run from the study to the lake three times, and reveals that he’d completed the task after 41 minutes and 24 seconds, which earns him just 1 point.
