Create an instrument and play a tune on it

  • In this task, the contestants are instructed to perform a tune on something which is not an existing musical instrument.
  • Sometimes they are instructed to perform a specific tune, but sometimes it is a tune of their choice, from within a specific genre (e.g. a children's music, or classical music).

Original version

In this version of the task, the contestants are specifically instructed to invent a new musical instrument and play a famous children’s tune on it. They are scored based on how good their musical instrument is, and a bonus point is awarded to anyone whose tune the Taskmaster is able to recognise.

Adaptations

In this version of the task, all of the contestants are instructed to play the same children’s song on something which isn’t a musical instrument, and they are judged based on how emotive their performance is.
In this version of the task, the contestants are instructed to perform a recognisable piece of classical music without using any existing musical instrument, and without using their voice. They are scored based upon how accomplished their performance is.

Make a new musical instrument and play a solo with a jazz band

In this version of the task, the contestants are instructed to create a new musical instrument at the house, and then their instruments are brought into the studio for them to play during the final live task. The points are awarded primarily for their in-studio performances.
