Task brief

The brief for the task is as follows:

Build the tallest tower of carrots.

Tallest free-standing carrot tower wins.

You have 30 seconds.

Your time is reset each time you whisper the name of a mammal.

If you whisper the same mammal twice, the task is over.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • As everyone ends up being such a spectacular failure at this task, the production brought in future season 6 Stormester contestant Sebastian Klein (well known to Danes as the host of many animal-based shows) to show how the task could be solved. Sebastian easily names mammals while building a carrot tower; he simply nails carrots together in square shapes and builds up, before eventually just deciding to stop.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Linda becomes frustrated with the task very quickly, telling Mark that it’s bad and should be cut from the program. She dumps the entire basket of carrots onto the table, and tells him to measure it as her tower. Linda’s tower is measured at 16cm. Mark points out that had she taken a single average-length carrot and stood it up vertically, she would have had an 18cm carrot tower. Linda comes third.
  • Once again attempting to outsmart the task (as he did in the meatballs task), Simon counts all of the carrots before opening the task, coming up with a total of 216 carrots; this theoretically puts him at a disadvantage at the start of the task, as the carrots are scattered on the table instead of gathered in a basket. Simon smartly realises that man is a mammal, so he could just start naming people’s names and not have to think of any animals. However, before he even starts building, he whispers a name he’s already used, meaning his time is over. Mark measures the carrots that Simon had taken out of the basket to count, and records Simon’s tower as being 12cm, pointing out that had he taken a single average-length carrot and stood it up vertically, he would have had an 18cm carrot tower. Simon comes fourth.
  • Sofie completely misunderstands the rules of the task. She builds in silence for 30 seconds; when she’s told that her time is up, she starts putting the carrots back into the basket, before being stopped and told that she cannot build anymore. In the studio, Sofie explains that she thought the rules were to build as tall a tower as she could in 30 seconds, and then if she could whisper a mammal, she would be given another 30 seconds to try again from scratch. Amazingly, despite not understanding the rules of the task, Sofie builds a 23cm tower, and wins the task.
  • Tobias has a plan for keeping track of the time (as the rules state no one will tell him when his 30 seconds is about to expire) – he sets a timer on his phone. Tobias starts taping carrots together in preparation to build with them, but whispers “cobra snake”, which is not a mammal, so his building time comes to an end. Tobias' tower is measured at 5cm, and he comes last.
  • Jonas is good at naming different mammals, and decent at building, but – as pointed out earlier – he cannot multitask. Jonas first tries building an actual tower, but keeps accidentally knocking it down after about 6-7 layers of carrots. He then tries taping the carrots together and hanging them from the ceiling (which he admits in the studio isn’t even a tower, but a carrot garland), before finally just dumping out the basket of carrots onto the floor, saying it’s his best bet. Jonas' tower is measured at 21cm, and he comes second.
