Sophie’s greed pays dividends
Sophie chooses the big decorative star which hangs on the wall in the hallway. As she points out to Alex that it already has a hook which maybe can be used to hang it from the board she accidentally pulls the hook off.
She decides to use the sellotape and velcro to attach the star to the board, and briefly begins to regret having gone for such a large item, admitting that she’d gotten greedy. She shares that she hadn’t previously thought she was someone who got competitive, but that participating on the show had really changed her as a person.
Making use of whatever part of the existing hanging hardware remains attached to the back of the star, Sophie hooks one of the velcro strips through and then stretches the strip over the top edge of the whiteboard, providing it with more support than if she’d attempted to simply adhere it to the front surface. This immediately proves to be a very effective strategy and, as she grabs to other velcro strips to add more support, she states that she thinks she’s “smashed the shit out of this”.
Having used the two additional strips of velcro as sort of tape strips to provide support to two of the star’s points, Sophie’s one minute timer is started. While the timer runs, she somewhat recklessly decides to decorate the hanging star by balancing handfuls of toffees on it (thus adding weight for no good reason) but fortunately for her the star remains on the board for the full minute.
In the studio, Sophie suggests that her intelligence lies in manual labour, and highlights the structural integrity of her hanging method. Greg comments that Sophie is talking about it with “the passion of a turn-of-the-century mill worker”.
Alex reveals that Sophie’s star weighed an impressive 3.3 kilograms, which earns her first place and 5 points.
