The task brief was emailed to the contestants on the 4th of January 2010. The brief for the task is as follows:

Bumper Boy: How Much Will It Cost Me To Get My Wife's Car Fixed?

On the night before New Year's Eve I drove my wife's beloved red Renault off a very high curb and this month I have to get it mended. Please find photos of damage attached. I'm planning on taking the broken vehicle to a Renault garage this month - how much do you think they'll charge me to make it better?

That's it. It's a mechanic's sort of question really. Nothing fancy. A guessing game. Good luck. If you happen to know someone who'll fix it cheaply, that'd be great, of course. But really it's just a matter of guessing how much it will cost me to get my wife's car fixed.

Task notes

The task yielded little results of interest, with Dan Atkinson responding as follows:
Dear Alex,
Seeing as you refuse to answer by quite reasonable questions about your bumper, it is only left for me to have a wild stab in the dark.
I have little mechanical training and even less knowledge of car maintenance.
Whoever does well at this task is a DICK who needs to GET A LIFE.
I think it will cost £278.31.
But I don't care.
