Task brief
The task brief was emailed to the contestants on the 4th of December 2009. The brief for the task is as follows:
Massive Christmas Presents.
Send me something LARGE through the post.
The five LARGEST things will win the points (10 for the biggest, then 8, 6, 4, 2).
You must send your LARGE thing to [address redacted].
*IMPORTANT: IT MUST ARRIVE BY 20 DECEMBER. YOU DON'T HAVE LONG.
Also, please send me your own weight, in stones, pounds or kilograms.
Sorry for this intrusion. I won't publish the figure anywhere I promise. But it is important. Thank you.
Task notes
- Alex received 15 copies of Eddie Large's autobiography, some of which had been signed by Eddie Large himself. Ten of the copies were sent by Steve Hall over a period of ten days. At the live show, the books were haphazardly flung into the audience one-by-one by Tim Key.
- Dan Atkinson sent Alex a big fat roll of bubble wrap. However, Stuart Goldsmith sent an even larger (specifically, taller) roll of bubble wrap, securing himself 3rd place and 6 points for the task.
- Mike Wozniak sent a circular wooden board which had purportedly supported a 40m tall ice sculpture. The package arrived on 20th December 2009 with an 'official' letter from the post office which read:
To whom it may concern:
This creative solution secured Mike 2nd place in the task.
This plinth has been repackaged and sent on to the intended address, in line with post office protocol.
On receipt, the original package was noted as containing the following: one circular acacia wood plinth - 25cm diameter - upon which rests one ice sculpture of a giant, one-legged man, standing on tiptoe and carrying a giant winged horse, also on tip-toe.
Sculpture dimensons: 40 metres height, 16 metres width, approximately.
Sent by Michael Wozniak of London. It is suspected the item was larger than described above at the time of sending. This is evidenced by the fact that the horse's ears were disproportionately small and were dripping.
Following receipt the item suffered catastrophic melt diminishment owing to a storage error. The Post Office accepts full responsibility for this as the sender clearly sent the item in good faith and at a time of cold weather.
As an aside, it is worth noting that this is the single largest item myself or any of my colleagues have witnessed being sent in the history of the Post Office. - An individual who was in the audience on the night was able to share on Facebook that another contestant (possibly Jarred Christmas) had submitted a certificate for a donation to the World Land Trust's 'Buy An Acre Fund' to purchase and protect an acre of threatened wilderness.
- That same audience member also recalled that another entry for this task had been a pornographic magazine.
- Alex also received, from unknown persons, a 2.3 metre tall 'inflatable beanstalk elephant pool', and a large flat cardboard box which 'once contained a mirror and had to be opened in a special way'.
- In season 4, episode 1 of the podcast My Mate Bought A Toaster, Mark Watson revealed that he had sent Alex - via Amazon - the book The Circus: 1870s - 1950s, a massive (measuring approximately 25cm x 38cm x 6cm, and weighing in at almost 5kg) illustrated coffee table book about the golden age of the circus, which he described as the largest book he'd ever encountered.
