Task briefs

The first task brief is received in the living room, where it is laid on the floor between two plinths. The second task brief is received in the lab, where an artist's palette and selection of poster paints are provided. The briefs for the task are as follows:

Choose one item from each plinth and bring them into the lab.

You have one minute.

Your time starts now.

Paint a self-portrait using your brush - or sausage - on your other chosen object.

You must use the business end of your brush - or sausage - and, in your self-portrait, you must be wielding your brush, or sausage.

Best self-portrait wins.

You have 15 minutes.

Your time started when you entered the lab.

Task notes

Attempts

Here's a brief description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on writing up some additional detail, though!

  • Dara chooses the toilet brush and the fitted sheet. He paints two big blue eyes and very little expression in his self-portrait, in front of "the Irish mountains". Alex points out that it looks more like Chris Whitty, and Greg awards him fourth place.
  • Fern chooses the sausage and the toilet seat. She paints a truly impressive self-portrait of herself holding the sausage, and earns first place.
  • John chooses the sausage and the loo roll. He places lengths of loo roll next to one another to create his canvas, and paints a cartoony picture of himself holding the sausage. During the task, the end of his sausage breaks off, and he asks whether he has to continue to use the broken off piece, or whether the now exposed part of the broken sausage is "a new business end", thus coining the title of the episode. It is pointed out that his portrait looks a bit like a Mr Potato Head, and he earns second place.
  • Munya chooses the electric toothbrush and the wheelie bin. He paints an armless self-portrait of himself holding a toothbrush in his mouth, with some of his internal organs also visible. He earns third place.
  • Sarah chooses the broom and the loo roll. She places lengths of loo roll next to one another to create a canvas, and uses a section of the broom's bristles as a smaller brush. Her somewhat smudged self-portrait earns her last place.
