Task brief

The task brief is found alongside a potato, next to a large circular red mat, on the driveway of the Taskmaster house. The brief for the task is as follows:

Build the highest bridge over the middle of the red green, and balance the potato on the middle of the bridge.

The potato may not be anchored in any way.

If anything touches the red green, you must put everything back where you found it, tut, and go back to the drawing board.

You have 20 minutes.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • By the garden arch near the gate, there is a chalkboard on an easel, upon which the words 'THE DRAWING BOARD' are written in chalk.
  • There are obvious call-backs in this task to the 'Get the potato into the hole' and 'Build a bridge for the potato' tasks, both from season 2 of the show.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Mae is first to arrive on the scene, and is holding the potato when Jenny arrives. When Jenny asks why they have it, they claim they brought it with them from home "for luck". Kiell arrives third, in time to catch Jenny explaining to Mae that you can sometimes smell when a potato is "on the turn". After reading the task brief, Jenny offers to be the one who takes care of the tutting. However, the team then all run off to collect supplies, with Kiell and Jenny fetching barrels and oil drums from the driveway, while Mae runs off towards the shed. They start stacking the barrels and oil drums on top of one another, either side of the red green, to create two vertical supports for their bridge, but Mae steps on the red green in the process, and then admits to it. Jenny is furious, asking Mae why they would voluntarily point out their mistake. The team returns all of their equipment to where it came from, and head over to start again from the drawing board. However, while they are heading up the driveway, one of the oil drums starts rolling back towards the red green behind them. Kiell spots this happening, and quickly touches the drawing board before running to intercept the oil drum. He successfully stops it from rolling onto the red green, but then ends up stepping on the mat himself, due to his momentum. The team tuts, rolls the drum back again, and returns to the drawing board once more. They restack their oil drums on top of their barrels, and place tyres on top of each tower, planning to suspend the potato on a duct tape suspension bridge between them. They then realise that they have lengths of drainpipe which they can hold up in the air to create even taller towers, and so completely abandon the original ones. They create a duct tape sling between the ends of two lengths of the pipe. The sling has a dog's bowl attached in the middle of it, to provide a safe place for the potato to rest. Kiell and Mae carefully raise their drainpipes and move the duct tape sling over the red green, raising it as high as possible. Jenny provides moral support by singing a song about a magic potato ascending into the sky, before helping Mae to lift their end of the bridge higher. In the studio, Alex reveals that they managed to get the potato 2.40 metres above the red green. This earns them three points each.
  • Frankie is first to arrive on the scene, and is holding the potato when Ivo arrives. Frankie clearly isn't expecting a team-mate, though, and assumes that Ivo is just someone making a delivery, when he comes through the gate. He therefore doesn't pay any attention to him until Ivo awkwardly introduces himself, at which point Frankie shares with him that he has a potato. However, Ivo is already greeting Alex by this point, and then apologises to Frankie for interrupting him "about the potato", which just makes the whole meeting so much more awkward. Having read the task brief, Frankie suggests that "as the clever one", Ivo should start making a plan, while he collects "a whole load of random shit". In the studio, Alex suggests that Frankie and Ivo were the most like a father-and-son team they'd ever had on the show, but just "a father and son who haven't really spent any time together". Back to their attempt, Frankie starts collecting supplies for their bridge, while Ivo spends an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out how to clean the chalkboard so that he can start making their plan. By the time he has erased the existing text on the board with his hand, Frankie has already formulated a plan to try and span the distance between the caravan and the geodesic dome, over the red green. After spending some time balancing a plank between the top of the giant golden pineapple inside the dome and a stepladder, Ivo suggests that they'd probably be better off just building closer to the red green itself, rather than trying to bridge such a long distance. They then decide that there's nothing in the rules against them becoming part of the bridge themselves. Ivo finds a second stepladder in the house, and they then create a bridge span out of lengths of drainpipe, into which they insert the potato. The two men then each stand on one of stepladders, either side of the mat, and hold up the drainpipe span between them. Alex is unable to measure the height of the bridge from the ground, as it is too tall, so has to fetch something to stand on. In the studio, Alex reveals that their bridge held the potato 2.81 metres above the red green. The team therefore wins the task, and earns five points each.
