Task briefs
The primary task brief is presented on barrel 1, in Thorpe Park’s covered Wilderness Bar & Kitchen restaurant. The briefs for the task are as follows:
Be at the highest number barrel when Alex blows his whistle again.
You may only move to the next barrel when you have completed the challenge at the previous barrel.
If you fail a barrel challenge twice in a row, you must move back to the first barrel.
If you are at an even-number barrel at the end of the barrel task, you are disqualified.
You have as long as it took you to walk to this barrel and read up to this line.
Your time started when you said the word ‘barrel’ for the ninth time.
On barrel 1:
Throw an odd number with this dice.
On barrel 2:
Answer Alex’s question correctly.
On barrel 3:
Pick any single red playing card.
On barrel 4:
Predict which hand Alex’s whistle is in.
On barrel 5:
Select an even-numbered bingo ball.
On barrel 6:
Eat a chocolate-covered coffee bean.
On barrel 7:
Toss a head.
On barrel 8:
Pull a lemon out from this box.
On barrel 9:
Congratulations, you have reached the ninth barrel.
You have done really well.
Good stuff.
Task notes
- The contestants begin the task standing just outside of the entrance to the covered restaurant, under a chequered banner with the word ‘START’ written on it. When Alex blows his whistle, they must make their way towards him, entering a ring of nine large wooden barrels with table tops as they do so.
- Each of the barrels is numbered between 1 and 9, starting with the one closest to where Alex is standing, and proceeding clockwise.
- Each barrel also has a piece of paper with instructions for a mini-task on its table top, and most of them also hold props relating to the mini-task to be completed:
- Barrel 1 has a large, yellow, six-sided foam die for them to throw.
- Barrel 2 has no props, but the contestants must correctly answer a ‘true’ or ‘false’ question from Alex.
- Barrel 3 has a standard deck of playing cards for them to draw from.
- Barrel 4 has no props, but the contestants must correctly guess in which hand Alex is holding his whistle.
- Barrel 5 has a bingo machine full of numbered balls for them to select from.
- Barrel 6 has a chessboard set up with chocolates instead of chess pieces for them to choose from, some of which are chocolate-covered coffee beans.
- Barrel 7 has a large plastic coin for them to toss.
- Barrel 8 has a box, with a hole in its top, containing lemons (and presumably also limes, since they are the same shape) for them to pull out.
- Barrel 9 has no props, as the task is over.
- Before they get to open the task brief, Alex asks each of the contestants the following questions:
- How far do you think you’ve just walked?
- Briefly, how are you in yourself?
- Did you sleep well last night?
- Did you have any peculiar dreams?
- How quickly the contestants make their way over to Alex, answer his questions, and then read the task brief dictates how long they have to complete the task.
