Task brief
The brief for the task is as follows:
Pop the balloons.
Fastest wins.
Your time starts when you pop the next balloon.
Task notes
- As Al Murray observed at the start of the task, but failed to investigate, the balloons were arranged on the line to spell out a message in Morse code.
- Specifically, the hidden message read 'POP JUST TWO AND WIN', providing the contestants with a potential shortcut to completing the task quickly.

Attempts
Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!
- Dave efficiently pops the balloon with the task brief inside of it. It isn’t until he reads the task brief that he notices the rest of the balloons on the washing line. He begins by complaining that he doesn’t have anything on him that he can use to pop the balloons, seemingly ignoring the fact that his time doesn’t start until the first balloon is popped. He proceeds to pop all of the balloons by biting or squeezing them. In the studio, Alex describes Dave’s attempt as “feral”, and suggests that he'd used his beard to pop some of them. Dave completes the task in 1 minute and 50 seconds, and earns 3 points.
- Sara pops the balloon containing the task brief by biting it. Although she acknowledges that her time doesn’t start until she pops the next balloon, she does no preparation, and proceeds to pop the balloons using her mouth, and occasionally her hands. She completes the task in 1 minute and 58 seconds, earning 2 points.
- Paul initially tries to pop the balloon containing the task brief by kicking it. He then appears to try to sit on it. He finally pops it, but the remnants of the balloon remain wrapped tightly around the task brief. Before popping any other balloons, he goes into the house to source equipment, and finds a set of dividers (like a drawing compass, but with two sharp points, and no pencil holder). He suggests that he could use this as a “knuckle duster”. He jabs at the balloons with the tool, popping most of them instantly, but has to use his other hand to hold some of them in place. Paul completes the task in 1 minute and 26 seconds, and earns 4 points
- Rob begins by saying that he doesn’t like popping balloons. He then bites into the balloon with the task brief inside, which slowly deflates. He heads into the kitchen, where he finds a knife, then asks for a lighter, before settling on holding a corkscrew in each hand. He heads back outside and attacks the balloons with his dual corkscrews “like an angry cat”. He completes the task in 31.6 seconds, and earns 5 points.
- Al begins by looking suspiciously at the washing line of balloons. When Alex questions him, he says “looks like they’re in morse code, 4 dots, 3 dashes, something. I don’t know.” Apparently dismissing this instinct that there is more here than meets the eye, Al decides instead to take his time and collect the balloons together into bags, so he can attack them together in a more confined space. Unfortunately, as he removes the balloons from the line, a helium-filled one immediately floats away. As he searches the shed for something to attack the remaining balloons with, his bags full of balloons blow around on the grass. He eventually opts for a cricket bat, and begins whacking the bags with it. As he does this, another helium balloon floats away. He ends up bursting the remaining balloons through a combination of hitting the bags with the bat, and stomping on them, in 34.6 seconds. He would have earned second place, but is demoted to last because of the two balloons which escaped.
