Joonas casts Pilvi as a bingo hostess
Joonas searches the shed for components with which to build his bingo machine, eventually emerging with a sand bucket and a long cardboard tube (last seen as part of the instrument that he’d created in the previous episode).
He sets up his machine in the living room, placing a sand bucket in Pilvi’s arms, then placing a length of guttering inside it. He also attaches the cardboard tube to the end of the guttering, leaning it against the mantelpiece behind Pilvi.
From the end of his construction, Joonas is able to grab a ping-pong ball (which does not appear to have anything written on it) from his own sand bucket, and then drop it down the tube, where it lands in Pilvi’s own bucket, and she is able to retrieve it.
Joonas instructs Pilvi to play the role of bingo hostess, and pretend that she is turning the crank on a large bingo machine. Pilvi obliges, and announces to the players that they are about to draw a number for the letter ‘K’, like ‘Kaaleppi’ (an old-fashioned name). Joonas drops a ball down the pipe, which Pilvi retrieves and reveals is the number two.
At this point, Joonas changes from being part of his own machine to being Pilvi’s co-host, as he joins in on her banter, cheerfully pointing out the presence of a woman in the audience who appears to be close to scoring a bingo. Pilvi agrees, before warning Joonas that the bingo game (i.e. his task) is in its final 10 seconds.
Joonas quickly drops another ball, and Pilvi announces that they are looking for a number for the letter ‘I’, like ‘Iivari’ (another old-fashioned name), which she swiftly reveals to be the number four. In a high-pitched voice, Joonas calls out “Bingo!” and the two congratulate the woman they had singled out during the previous round on her victory.
In the studio, Jaakko questions what part of Joonas’ creation he considered to be a ‘machine’. Joonas attempts to justify Pilvi’s turning of the pretend crank as mechanical, before launching into an impromptu monologue about how his attempt was really a statement about how machines cannot truly replace humans. Spurred on by the reaction his claim receives, he continues, insisting that Finland is a country that has always been made great by “physical labour and handiwork”, and that it will continue to be so in the future, as well. His posturing is interrupted by Eero and Pamela, who once again label Joonas as a Centrist, continuing the running joke about him which has spanned the season (see his attempts at the ‘Make a moustache out of something unexpected’ and ‘Deliver a presentation to a primary school teacher’ tasks).
Jaakko awards everyone 3 points as a baseline score. He then awards Joonas a bonus point for his last minute justification of his bingo machine.
