Attempts
Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!
- Dara immediately has multiple questions, such as "How long does it take to laminate a sign?", "What size does a sign have to be?", and "Is there a standard size for laminated signs?". He then experiences issues with getting the font large enough for his signs, before struggling to figure out how to print them out. His first sign comes out with tiny text, and his first attempt at using the laminator fails because he doesn't understand how the laminator sheets work. Some of his signs have been torn off the sheet before being laminated. His 25 signs include the instructions 'Watch out for Burglars', 'Watch out for high-value Kidnappers', 'The Gruffalo!', 'Muntjack Deer!', 'Tigers!', 'Get your arse off this', and 'Here come the police. Run away!' He earns first place, based on the number of signs distributed.
- Fern starts out by sharing that she used to work in her dad's office, and he had docked some of her wages because she laminated her love letters to her then boyfriend. In studio, she says that she thought laminating them showed that she really meant what she'd written in the letters. She fits multiple signs on each page of paper and uses the paper cutter to separate them, once laminated. She comments during the process that she feels very productive, "even though this is very silly". Her signs include the instructions 'Turn your phone to silent', 'Leave your husband' (which she does not remember typing), 'Warm your bum' (three times, somehow), 'Eat 25g fibre a day starting from now', 'Breathe', 'Run', and 'Poo in your pants'. She earns second place, based on the number of signs distributed.
- John gets somewhat distracted by the variety of fonts available to him, and apparently decides that he's going to use as many of them as possible. He uses Georgia, a Western-style font, Jokerman, and (fatally) Wingdings. His seven signs, each of which use a full sheet of A4, include the instructions 'Don't sit down', 'Bum's only' (in Wingdings), 'Alex's seat', and 'The joker mans seat' (in Jokerman). He earns last place, based on the number of signs distributed.
- Munya initially claims that technology is "just like breathing" to him, but soon proves that is not the case for laminators. First off, he just puts a piece of paper in with no laminating pocket, expecting it to somehow become laminated within the machine. When he realises that he has to use the laminating pockets, he just sticks one in on top of the paper that's already being pulled into the machine. Once he realises how it's supposed to work, he gets frustrated at how long the process takes, and searches for a 'fast setting', before trying to pull them through from the other side. His haste leads to poorly-laminated signs with bubbles and creases. His nine signs, several of which include ClipArt illustrations, include the instructions 'Alex stinks (agree)', 'Think good thoughts', 'Do not sit here if you are from Sheffield', 'Live, laugh, be leng', and 'Be healthy my bro'. In the studio, he claims that the task was ageist because laminator technology is so old. He earns fourth place, based on the number of signs distributed.
- Sarah has no problems creating her signs, even though she has never laminated anything before. Her signs start out based on the lyrics of Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive ('Go', 'Walk out the door', 'Turn around'), and proceed along the same theme, including 'Leave', 'Go away', 'Bugger off', and 'Sod off'. There are also signs saying 'Do eat that' and 'Don't eat that', and 'Take your pants off'. Altogether, she makes 14 signs, and earns third place.
