Task briefs

The task brief is laid upon a digital weighing scale on a table in the plastic dome. The briefs for the task are as follows:

To everyone except Eva:

Build the lightest tower on this scale.

You may not block or modify the fan.

The fan turns on and off every two minutes.

The tower must be built on the scale, and must be taller than an adult wolf.

Lightest tower wins.

You have 10 minutes.

To Eva:

Build the lightest tower on this scale.

You may not block or modify the fan.

The fan turns on and off every two minutes.

The tower must be built on the scale, and must be taller than an adult wolf.

Lightest tower wins.

You have 10 minutes.

Every time the bell rings, pretend you've had a great idea.

Task notes

  • On one side of the scale is an electric oscillating fan, and on the other side is a wooden stick with the heights of various animals marked upon it (rat, rabbit, badger, fox, koala, and wolf).

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Sebastian creates a tower using just one garden cane and some tape, and it remains standing for the requisite 30 seconds. His tower is at least as tall as a wolf, and weighs just 68g, earning him first place.
  • Simon constructs a tripod out of garden canes, and it remains standing for the requisite 30 seconds. His tower is the tallest, and weighs 349g, earning him third place.
  • Julie constructs a tower out of taped-together milk cartons, but fills one or more of them with water to give them some stability. The tower is at least as tall as a wolf, and remains standing for the requisite 30 seconds, but the water also increases the weight to 1.028kg, making it the heaviest of all the contestants' towers. However, since Eva's tower is not tall enough, Julie earns fourth place.
  • Martin constructs a tower out of rolled-up paper, and it remains standing for the requisite 30 seconds. His tower is at least as tall as a wolf, and weighs just 98g, earning him second place.
  • Eva has the additional challenge of pretending she's had a great idea, every time a bell rings. She attempts to build a tower out of cotton wool and a flower from the garden, but then switches to using a metallic cockerel garden ornament as the base of the tower, instead. Although the tower remains standing, and turns out to be lighter than Julie's, it is clearly not tall enough. However, Eva just doesn't seem to be able to see that, from her eye level, and insists that it is the height of a wolf. Lasse decides to take pity on her, though, and awards her one point for her effort.
