Task brief

The task brief is laid on a red velvet pillow on a plinth outside the house. The brief for the task is as follows:

Transport your cornflakes along the magical waterfall path and deposit them in the receptacle at the end.

You must be on the path and wearing your cornflake helmet at all times.

In each pool, you must guess the pool gnome’s name, then wait 10 seconds before proceeding.

If the name is correct, the gnome will allow dry passage.

If the name is incorrect, the gnome will release its magic.

The gnomes’ names are Balthazar, Gerald, Ian, Reggie, Owen, Valentino, and Yogi.

Least soggy cornflakes wins.

You have 10 minutes.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • Also on the plinth, there is a helmet with a large metal bowl full of dry cornflakes attached to it.
  • At the other end of the paved area running along the back of the house, there is a second plinth, upon which there is a large metal pan.
  • Running between the two plinths, there are a series of seven paddling pools, with stepping stones between them.
  • In front of each paddling pool, there is a garden gnome. Each gnome has a different-coloured hat. Running from left to right, the hats are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet (i.e. the colours of the rainbow).
  • The name of each gnome begins with the first letter of the colour of its hat, so, from left to right, they are named: Reggie, Owen, Yogi, Gerald, Balthazar, Ian, and Valentino.
  • Above each of the paddling pools, a bucket containing water has been mounted on a pivot on the side of the house. Each bucket has a lid, but holes have been drilled into it, so that water pours out as if from a shower when the bucket is tipped.
  • Each time a contestant guesses a gnome’s name incorrectly, Tom Cashman pulls on the rope behind the relevant paddling pool, tipping the bucket above, and potentially soaking the contestant’s cornflakes.
  • Once the contestants have reached the end of the path, they must empty their cornflakes into the pan. Tom Cashman is then seen eating a spoonful of their cornflakes from the pan, regardless of how wet or dry they are.
