Task brief
The task brief is attached to a small exercise ball, which is spinning around on top of a column of air produced by a leaf-blower, in the porch of the house. The brief for the task is as follows:
Make the heaviest thing hover.
You may only try one thing.
You have only one attempt.
Heaviest hovering thing wins.
Task notes
- The exercise ball has a cartoon face printed on it, and a handle at the top, and is clearly designed as a sort of space hopper toy for children.
- The leaf-blower is stuck pointing upwards at an angle through a hole in a table on the porch.
- The exercise ball is kept hovering in the air stream of the leaf-blower in an example of fluid dynamics principles explained by Bernoulli’s theorem.
- Also on the table, there is a digital weighing scale, for weighing whatever object the contestants decide to try to make float.
- The word ‘sveve’ used in the task brief can mean either ‘hover’, ‘fly’, ‘soar’, or ‘levitate’, which opens up the possible range of solutions for the task, and one contestant takes advantage of this.
