Task brief
The brief for the task is as follows:
Deduce the flavours of these dips.
Most dips correctly deduced wins.
You have 10 minutes, starting from now.
Task notes
- The actual flavours of the dips are as follows:
- 'Mince and Cheese' - mince and cheese pie is popular dish in New Zealand, but this dip is actually flavoured with breath mints and blue cheese;
- 'Chocolate Fish' - referencing a popular New Zealand sweet snack, but in this case the dip is flavoured with chocolate and actual fish;
- 'Pineapple Lumps' - referencing a popular New Zealand pineapple-flavoured, chocolate-covered sweet, but in this case the dip contains pine needles and lumps of apple;
- 'Cheeky Sav' - flavoured with beef cheek and Sauvignon Blanc wine;
- 'Pumpkin and Kumara Hummus' - with 'kumara' being the Māori word for a sweet potato.

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!
- Angella manages to deduce a large amount of flavours, so earns second place. She coins the episode title by describing one of the flavours as “sweaty socks and depression” (she also suggests this one contains “blue cheese”, “custard”, and “cheese spread”). Her guesses for the other flavours include “chocolate and tuna”, “hummus and corn”, “apple, chives and yoghurt”, and “some kind of beef” with “salad dressing”, possibly “ranch dressing”.
- Guy doesn’t manage to deduce many flavours, so he earns last place. His guesses are “lemon”, “chocolate”, “pumpkin”, “coconut and raspberry” (for the beef cheek and wine one), and “Toilet Duck”.
- Madeleine manages to deduce a fair amount of flavours through her sense of smell alone (avoiding eating any because she hasn’t eaten any dairy for a long time), and earns joint third place. She guesses “pongy cheese dip”, “fish flesh” (which she records as “stankalicious tuna dip”), hummus (she records what looks like “Paul’s perf Hummus”), “cream cheese, dill and apple”, and “bacon sour cream”.
- Leigh manages to deduce a fair amount of flavours, so earns joint third place. He guesses that the flavours include blue cheese, “sweet chocolate mousse”, hummus, and “fish dip / seafood”. Strangely, the one he thinks is fishy is not the one with fish in it. As he leaves the lab, he takes the bowl of chips and the mint and blue cheese dip with him.
- Brynley initially guesses that the flavours include blue cheese, “tuna and chocolate pudding”, and “lemon” (for the hummus). She then finds one of the pine needles and decides to empty that bowl out, to see if there’s a clue inside, discovering that all of the flavours are written at the bottom of the bowls with just 2.5 minutes left. She crosses out all of her existing guesses and empties all of the bowls to find the true answers, so she ends up getting all of them 100% correct. She leaves the lab in an absolute state, and with dip all over her hands. In the studio, Jeremy decides to deduct one point from her for spitting out a mouthful of one of the dips onto a chip near the start of her attempt, leaving her with 4 points instead of the full five.
