Attempts
Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!
- Inês tells Nuno that she has a trick to help her sneeze: staring into the light (this is called a ‘photic sneeze reflex’). She stares into one of the lab’s bright lights and shoves her finger up her nose in attempt to tickle it. This causes her to cough and laugh, which she half-heartedly attempts to pass off as a sneeze. She states that sniffing pepper has never caused her to sneeze, so she rules out that method (though later on in her footage, there are small bowls of different peppers on the table, so she clearly tried at some point). She (jokingly) attempts to bribe everyone in the room with birthday cake, saying she’ll bring some if everyone agrees that Inês' fake sneeze was legitimate. Eventually, Inês sources a feather, but it’s too big and stiff to fit up her nose. She attempts to agitate her nose by sticking the quill end of the feather up it instead; surprisingly, this causes her to sneeze. Inês sneezes in 7 minutes 12 seconds and earns fourth place.
- Gilmário tears off part of the task, twists it up, and shoves it up each of his nostrils. Eventually, this method works. Gilmário sneezes in 1 minute 30 seconds and earns first place.
- Toy gets a few small bowls of different peppers, and places a generous amount of each under his nose. He then shoves his nose directly into the bowls. Toy continues patting large amounts of pepper onto his nose and upper lip. After a failed attempt, Toy declares that his nose is on fire. After a short break, Toy continues to pile pepper on his nose and upper lip and – mercifully – finally sneezes. Toy sneezes in 3 minutes 38 seconds and earns third place.
- Jessica stares at the lights in the lab, before declaring that she will perhaps need to go outside in order to trigger her photic sneeze reflex. It is unknown whether Jessica attempted a sun-triggered photic sneeze is unknown, as the next part of her footage shows her still in the lab, only now she has several small bowls of different peppers in front of her, and she also has a feather. When the feather doesn’t work, Jessica pats a small amount of pepper around each of her nostrils. This seems to work, as she soon announces that she can feel a sneeze coming. She stares up at the lights, and sneezes – nearly a dozen times in quick succession. As she leaves the lab, she is still sneezing; Nuno finally gives in and starts laughing at her. In the studio, Jessica reveals that the task triggered her allergies, and she was sneezing for the rest of the day while filming other tasks. Jessica sneezes in 2 minutes 43 seconds and earns second place.
- Immediately after reading the task, Inês performs a clearly fake sneeze. When Nuno informs her that he wasn’t even able to start the clock, she tells him to start it, counts out two seconds, and lets out another obviously fake sneeze. After a debate in the studio as to whether her attempt should be valid, Inês CB admits that it was the first task that she filmed, and she was not aware that it was meant to be taken (somewhat) seriously; that she was just told to try to be funny while filming, and that she didn’t mind if she lost this one. Interestingly, she could have argued that the task did not dictate that the sneeze needed to be legitimate, but she does not even try – instead, her initial argument was that her fake sneezes were real. Vasco awards her fifth place instead of outright disqualifying her.
