Task brief

The task brief is presented on a plinth in the shed, along with a folded pair of trousers. The brief for the task is as follows:

Put the trousers in the caravan on, or put the trousers in the caravan on in the shed, or put the trousers in the shed on in the caravan.

Never touch the trousers in the shed with your hands.

Never touch any trousers in the caravan with your hands.

You have 10 minutes.

Fastest wins.

Your time began when you opened the task.

Task notes

  • There is an identical pair of trousers in the caravan.
  • The task brief is deliberately confusing but, ultimately, the contestants have the option of either putting on the shed trousers in the caravan, or putting on the caravan trousers in the shed, or putting the caravan trousers on in the caravan.
  • The contestants may not touch the trousers which begin in the shed with their hands, and may not touch any trousers with their hands while in the caravan, but may move the trousers from the caravan to the shed, and touch them with their hands in there.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Edvin takes some time making sure he understands the task. He even has a pen handy to take notes if needed. He finally makes his way down to the caravan, where he has a breakdown and reads the task again. He finally decides that the task will be solved if he puts on the caravan trousers in the caravan, so he goes to the shed to search for supplies. He wraps his hands in bubble wrap, but also decides to use pliers to make extra sure he’s not touching the trousers. He puts on the caravan trousers while in the caravan after 8 minutes and 30 seconds, and earns second place.
  • Marko reads the task several times, as he is confused by it. He proudly boasts to David that he intends to pick up the plinth to move the trousers, but then admits that’s where his understanding of the task stops. After reading the task once more, Marko picks up the plinth and heads down to the caravan, reading the task once again while walking. Upon finding the second pair of trousers in the caravan, Marko picks them up and shows them to David, asking if he’s allowed to touch them. Marko realises that the task allows him to touch trousers while he’s in the shed (he’s correct, but specifically the trousers need to have come from the caravan), so he goes back to the shed with the plinth and puts the shed trousers on in the shed. However, since he touched the shed trousers in the shed and touched a pair of trousers while in the caravan, Marko comes joint last.
  • Nikki declares that the task is confusing. She drops it on the ground, picks up the plinth, and walks with it to the caravan. In the caravan, she picks up the trousers from the plinth and puts them on, saying that her understanding of the task is that she is allowed to do so. She and David reread the task, and he admits that he finds it complicated as well. Since she touched trousers while in the caravan, Nikki comes joint last.
  • Linnéa says the task is confusing, but believes the easiest thing to do would be to put on the shed trousers. She uses some clamps to hold the trousers open, and puts on the shed trousers in the shed. David reads the three options aloud to her from the task, and asks which she believes she has come closest to. She replies that she has chosen to put trousers on in the shed. When David tries to point out that Linnéa has not actually done what the shed part of the task dictates, Linnéa claims that she interprets the task as having a grammatical error. Finally, she understands what she was meant to do, and runs to the caravan, where she drops the trousers and then uses the clamps to pull them back up, thus putting on the shed trousers while in the caravan. Linnéa completes the task in 8 minutes 18 seconds, earning first place.
  • Henrik starts the task confidently, but soon confuses himself. He uses a pair of scissors to move the trousers towards the caravan. Midway through, he realises that he can touch trousers while in the shed (he’s correct, but specifically the trousers need to have come from the caravan), so he goes back to the shed and takes off his own trousers. While David mutters that the trousers are big enough to be worn over Henrik’s clothes, Henrik uses two pairs of scissors to manoeuvre the trousers over his legs. After reading the task one more time, Henrik decides that it has been solved. Because he put the shed trousers on in the shed, Henrik comes joint last.
