Task brief

The task brief is found on the table in the caravan. The brief for the task is as follows:

Exit the caravan exactly 20 minutes after you entered the caravan.

Also, to complete the task, you must write down and say 40 words.

Each word must either be the same length, or shorter, than the previous word.

Closest to exactly 20 minutes wins.

Task notes

  • Scattered around the interior of the caravan are a number of time-keeping devices, including hourglasses and sundials.
  • A digital stopwatch is hidden within a secret compartment in the floor of the caravan (along with three lemons, for some reason), and very large analogue clock is set on top of the caravan.
  • A small mirror on an extendible handle is also provided, to help the contestants find the large clock, by holding the mirror up through the sunroof.
  • There are clear similarities between this task and the 'Enter and leave the caravan exactly on time' task from Bäst i Test, which aired just a few weeks earlier. However, there are enough differences between the two tasks that this one is categorised as original here.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Frankie decides that, having been a stand-up comic for many years, he can probably rely upon his internal clock to estimate when his 20 minutes are up. He therefore spends his time focusing on coming up with the list of 40 words. He starts his list with the word 'progression', and then follows this with 'progressive'. Alex checks in with Frankie a couple of times, to see how long he thinks he has been in the caravan. At 4 minutes and 46 seconds, Frankie estimates he's been in there about 5 minutes, and at 9 minutes and 14 seconds, he estimates he's been in there for about 9 minutes. Other words on his list include 'jolly', 'lolly', 'sorry', 'silly', 'willy', 'lamp', 'rams', 'ram', and 'no'. He eventually decides that he's been in the caravan for 20 minutes, but notes that it's also possible that he's just panicked at the 17 minute mark. In the studio, Alex reveals that Frankie actually left the caravan after 23 minutes and 21 seconds. He ultimately ends up in second place.
  • Jenny decides that, having been a stand-up comic for many years, she can probably rely upon her internal clock to estimate when her 20 minutes are up. She therefore spends her time focusing on coming up with the list of 40 words. She starts her list with the word 'imagination' and then realises that there's nothing in the rules prohibiting using the same word over and over, so proceeds to write the same word down 39 times. Alex notes that it's somewhat ironic that she would choose to repeat this specific word, given how little imagination is required in her solution. On a couple of occasions during her attempt, Jenny attempts to trick Alex into revealing to her how much time she has remaining, by just asking him outright and hoping he is caught off-guard. When he asks her the same question back, at 4 minutes and 57 seconds, she estimates that she has been in the caravan for about 8 minutes. Her list ends dramatically with the word 'broken'. She eventually decides that she's been in the caravan for 20 minutes, but notes that it's also possible that she's actually overstayed her welcome and left at 30 minutes. In the studio, Alex reveals that Jenny actually left the caravan after just 10 minutes and 57 seconds. However, after Kiell and Mae are disqualified, Jenny earns third place.
  • Kiell initially considers the sundial, but realises that he has no idea how to use one. He then finds the mirror with the extendible handle, and uses it to sneakily peek at one of the cameramen's watches. Unfortunately for him, the camerman eventually catches on to this, and removes his watch, leaving Kiell time-blind. His list of words includes 'profiteroles', 'balloon', 'crisps', 'crest', 'dress',  'cross', 'point', 'course', 'badge', 'lose', 'vet', 'mice', 'shoe', 'clap', 'egg', 'wet', 'cat', 'dog', and 'hat'. In the studio, Alex reveals that Kiell left the caravan after 24 minutes and 20 seconds. However, he also reveals that Kiell had written the word 'course' (with six letters) after the word 'point' (with five letters), and the word 'mice' (four letters) after the word 'vet' (three letters), and also that he'd only included 39 words in his list. He is therefore disqualified from the task on multiple counts.
  • Mae starts looking around inside the caravan, and quickly discovers the mirror with an extendible handle, which leads them to immediately discovering the clock on top of the caravan. Climbing up through the sunroof to look at the clock, they are able to note the current time, and estimate what time they need to leave the caravan. To help come up with their list of words, Mae finds a book in the caravan. Their list begins with the word 'licentiousness', and they decide that they are going to enumerate word length by the number of syllables in each word, rather than the number of letters. After some time spent working on the list, Mae decides to check the time on the clock, but discovers that it is not actually moving (Alex clarifies later, in the studio, that it had stopped working after some rain fell during Mae's attempt). Mae then panics, convinced that they have already used their time, and so sets about quickly finishing off their list of words, which includes 'misanthropic', 'painfully', 'schoolmaster', 'principal', 'confessions', 'disturbing', 'outrageous' (which is the first word added after the discovery of the broken clock), 'humiliate', 'canonise', 'wealthy', and 'vile'.  In the studio, Alex reveals that Mae left the caravan after 19 minutes and 48 seconds. However, he also reveals that they had written the word 'humiliate' (which has four syllables) after the word 'outrageous' (with three syllables), and so had failed the task. Mae attempts to argue that 'humiliate' is pronounced 'humliate' in Canada, but is ultimately disqualified from the task.
  • Ivo begins his attempt by observing that any time spent developing a technique for tracking the time will also eat into the untracked period of time. However, he then proceeds to spend an inordinate amount of his limited time manually checking and then re-checking how long multiple hourglasses in the caravan take to run down. This whole exercise appears largely fruitless, as he never seems to arrive at a definitive estimate for how much time the hourglasses run for. He then spots the sunroof, though, and climbs up to discover the large clock on the caravan's roof. He initially tries to pull it inside the caravan, despite it clearly being too big. He then has the idea of asking a passer-by what the time is, and so pulls himself up as far as he can through the sunroof, and yells at a nearby golfer. Estimating that he has been in the caravan already for 13 minutes, and equipped with the current time of 5:25pm, he estimates that he needs to leave the caravan at 5:32. Only then does he start work on his list of words, which begins with 'establishment' and 'establishing', and also includes 'task', 'top', 'sit', 'pest', and 'post'. While working on the list, he tries to keep track of the time using one of the hourglasses, which he has presumably accepted at this point tracks just one minute of time. Before leaving the caravan, he pulls himself up through the sunroof again and asks another golf what time it is, receiving the answer that it is 5:30pm. He kills another minute by flipping his hourglass one more time before leaving the caravan, convinced that it has gone "brilliantly". In the studio, Alex reveals that Ivo actually left the caravan after 23 minutes and 17 seconds, which ultimately wins him the task.
